Our artificial intelligence (AI) principles serve to guide to our approach to AI, whilst providing a framework ensuring responsible and ethical implementation. We will make ethical decisions and navigate the evolving AI landscape with a balanced and adaptive approach, thoughtfully managing risks while amplifying our impact as a catalyst for positive change. As always, our mission is to help the chemical science community make the world a better place.

While chemical scientists have been at the forefront of AI applications in science, some elements of AI present unique challenges, not least because it is difficult to understand the implications of decisions relating to such a new and evolving technology. We are using the following principles to guide how we work with AI tools within ºÚÁÏÉçÇø, the services and products we develop for our community, and how we adapt to a world where AI is changing how scientific information is discovered and used.

Ethical use

We will uphold ethical standards and responsible practices in AI deployment and governance. We will adhere to principles of fairness, accountability, non-discrimination, and sustainability. We commit to proactively identify and manage potential risks associated with AI adoption. We recognise the importance of human oversight to AI systems.

Transparency

We commit to transparency around our evolving use of AI in our activities, including our mitigations of inherent challenges with the different elements of AI. 

Community focus 

We commit to work with our community to navigate the evolving aspects of AI - to extend the reach, application and impact of the chemical sciences.

Governance and accountability

We have implemented policies and processes to guide our own adoption and use of AI applications in all their forms. Building on our robust policies to ensure information security, data governance, privacy, licensing, and responsible use of AI in publishing, we have a responsible approach to assessing the fit and impact of AI applications which will continue to evolve.
